Choosing the Correct Tab Orientation for Professional File Folders

Tab Off Front vs. Tab Off Back

When ordering custom no pocket file folders, one small detail can make a big difference: tab orientation. Choosing between tab off front and tab off back impacts how your folders look, how they function, and how easily you can organize your files. At FolderWorks™ we’ve seen this simple choice lead to frustration—and costly reprints—so let’s make sure you get it right the first time.

Why Tab Orientation Matters

Your folder’s tab isn’t just a design element; it’s where your labels and branding live. If the tab faces the wrong direction, your artwork could end up hidden at the back of the filing cabinet instead of being placed front and center. Understanding tab orientation makes sure your folders are functional, professional, and visually effective.

The FolderWorks™ Standard

We default to tab off front, because it’s the most common configuration for hanging file systems. But both options have their place. Here’s what you need to know:

Tab Off of the Front of the File Folder

Tab Off Front: The Standard Choice

Tab off front means the tab extends from the front edge of the folder. This is a popular orientation for most filing systems, particularly when using hanging file folders in drawers.

Tab Off the Back of File Folder

Tab Off Back: Alternative Approach

Tab off back means the tab extends from the back edge of the folder. While less common, some organizations and individuals prefer this orientation for specific reasons.

Advantages of Tab Off Front

  • Easy Visibility: Tabs and labels are immediately visible when you flip through the front of the drawer.

  • Better Security: Papers sit behind the tab, reducing the chance of documents slipping out or being filed behind the folder.

  • Industry Standard: Most office environments are designed for this orientation, making it the safest choice for consistency.

What About Tab Off Back?

  • Custom Filing Systems: Organizations with unique filing protocols or specific accessibility needs.

  • Consistency with Existing Systems: If your current setup uses tab off back, stick with it for uniformity.

  • Personal Preference: Sometimes, it simply feels more intuitive for your filing habits.

Important Design Considerations for Tab Off Back

If you want the printing on the tab to be visible, you need to print on the inside of the folder. Two-sided printing (printing on the outside and inside of the folder) comes with an additional cost.

However, printing on just the inside of the folder (leaving the exterior blank) costs the same as standard single-sided printing.

Consistency is Key

Whether you choose tab off front or tab off back, consistency matters more than orientation. A mixed system creates confusion and slows down filing. Pick on approach and apply it across your entire filing system.
