If you’ve never worked with a print template before, the terminology can be confusing, but once you understand the basics, you’ll be able to avoid common mistakes and create polished, professional designs.

1. Bleed

• What it means: The area that extends beyond the final trim size. It ensures your background colors or images reach the edge of the finished product.

• Why it matters: Prevents unwanted white borders after trimming.

• FolderWorks™ Tip: Always extend background colors and images at least 1/8" into the bleed area to ensure full coverage after trimming.

2. Safe Zone

• What it means: The area inside the trim line where all important content should be placed.

• Why it matters: Keeps logos, text, and key visuals from being cut off.

• FolderWorks™ Tip: Keep all critical content at least 1/8" inside the trim line to avoid accidental cropping.

3. Trim Line

• What it means: The line where the product will be cut to its final size.

• Why it matters: Anything outside this line may be trimmed off—so design accordingly.

• FolderWorks™ Tip: Use our templates to preview the trim line and ensure your layout stays clean and professional.

4. Fold Line

• What it means: Indicates where the folder will be folded during production.

• Why it matters: Helps you avoid placing text or images directly on a fold, which could distort them.

• FolderWorks™ Tip: Avoid placing logos or small text directly on fold lines—they may shift or warp during folding.

5. CMYK

• What it means: The four colors used in professional printing—Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.

• Why it matters: Designing in CMYK ensures accurate color output.
